We recently built a large website for OlenkaCooks.com; Peruvian & World Recipes. We originally started the project just as an SEO tuneup, but quickly found that recipe websites require a specialized development approach.
Building a recipe website involves several key steps, including creating and structuring individual recipes in a way that search engines like Google can understand through structured data. Here’s an overview of the process:
- Content Creation: Start by creating high-quality content for your recipes. Each recipe should include detailed instructions, an ingredient list, cooking time, serving size, video instructions, and other relevant information.
- Structured Data Markup: Structured data markup is a standardized format for providing information about a webpage and classifying its content. For recipes, you use schema.org markup to provide structured data to search engines. This markup helps search engines understand the content of your recipes and display rich snippets in search results.
- Schema.org Markup for Recipes: Schema.org provides a specific schema for marking up recipes. You’ll need to include properties such as name, description, image, recipe ingredient, recipe instructions, prepTime, cookTime, recipe yield, etc. These properties help search engines understand the key components of your recipes.
- Testing Structured Data: After implementing structured data markup, it’s important to test it using Google’s Structured Data Testing Tool or the Rich Results Test. These tools help ensure that your markup is correctly implemented and that search engines can understand it.
- Optimizing for SEO: In addition to structured data markup, there are other SEO (Search Engine Optimization) considerations for recipe websites, such as optimizing meta tags, using descriptive URLs, optimizing images with alt tags, and creating high-quality, keyword-rich content.
By following these steps, you can create a recipe website that is not only user-friendly but also optimized for search engines like Google, helping to attract more visitors and increase your website’s visibility online.
